Imperial Rome mosaic discovered during fibre optic works in Tivoli
Ancient and modern meet in an urban setting already known for the richness of remains from different historical periods. In Tivoli, during fibre optic works carried out by FiberCop, a Roman mosaic floor dating back to the early imperial period has been brought to light. The excavations, conducted within an extended investigation area at the request of the Heritage Office and under the supervision of archaeologists from Gea S.C.a.r.L., led to the discovery of two graves bordered by low masonry walls, attributable to an area of ancient Tibur that was later reused for funerary purposes, probably in the medieval period. The precise dating of the burials will be determined through further stratigraphic and laboratory analyses.
The investigative activities fall within the framework of the Simplification Agreement between FiberCop and the Office for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan area of Rome and the province of Rieti, coordinated by Architect Lisa Lambusier. The agreement makes it possible to reconcile the protection of archaeological heritage with the development of network infrastructure, in support of the country’s digital transformation. In the event of new discoveries, the operational model provides for the immediate suspension of works, followed by targeted site investigations, documentation and securing of the archaeological site. The agreement also provides, where necessary, for the rescheduling of routes or the adoption of in situ protective measures, in order to minimise the impact on ancient deposits.
This cooperation also extends to protected areas, turning utility excavations into opportunities for research, preservation and the updating of the city’s archaeological map. All data and finds will be archived at the Heritage Office for further scientific study and for any protective measures that may be required, contributing to more informed urban planning and to future initiatives aimed at enhancing the historical heritage.
