Networks and the environment: FiberCop maps the relationship between infrastructure and ecosystems

News Fibercop - Networks and the environment: FiberCop maps the relationship between infrastructure and ecosystems

Knowing where network infrastructure runs also entails understanding how it fits into the local landscape, the natural balance, and the dynamics of flora, fauna and ecosystems. This vision has given rise to FiberCop’s first biodiversity assessment, published on the occasion of World Environment Day and carried out with the scientific support of InVento Innovation Lab. The study maps FiberCop’s digital infrastructure against protected areas and sensitive ecosystems, right across Italy.

The analysis cross-reference key assets – around 10,000 exchanges, over 200,000 distribution cabinets and millions of network components – with biodiversity protection schemes, such as ‘Natura 2000’ sites. The result is a ‘coexistence map’ which shows that FiberCop’s telecommunications network is mainly located in urbanised areas, but is often situated close to areas of high natural value.

This knowledge enables us to improve infrastructure planning and management, reducing the impact on land, vegetation and wildlife, while at the same time strengthening the network’s resilience to environmental risks. In a country like Italy, where biodiversity is a widespread asset and a defining feature of its identity, this aspect takes on particular significance. It highlights the need for careful management, capable of balancing essential infrastructure for digital development with the protection of ecosystems.

Compared with other infrastructure sectors, telecommunications generally have a limited impact on biodiversity, but the analysis confirms that a sophisticated approach is essential in this sector too, particularly in the most sensitive contexts.

As such, the biodiversity assessment serves as a starting point for developing increasingly targeted conservation measures and for strengthening collaboration with institutions and local communities, confirming FiberCop’s commitment to combining digital development with the protection of ecosystems.
