FIBERCOP AND ENERCOP LAUNCH PROJECT TO TRANSFORM TELECOMMUNICATIONS EXCHANGES INTO RENEWABLE ENERGY HUBS

  • Installation of the first 26 systems is under way, delivering annual savings of approximately 1,435 tonnes of CO
  • Target: 2,000 systems and around 200 GWh of renewable energy by 2027
  • At full rollout, photovoltaic power will cover 35% of FiberCop’s total energy consumption

Rome, 22 December 2025 – FiberCop, the company managing Italy’s most extensive and far-reaching digital infrastructure, and EnerCop, an energy services provider serving business customers, have launched "Progetto Solare” [Solar Project], an initiative aimed at integrating photovoltaic power generation into FiberCop’s infrastructure nationwide.

The two companies, both part of the Optics HoldCo Group, aim to deliver more than 2,000 systems and approximately 200 GWh of renewable energy by 2027, significantly increasing the energy self-sufficiency of FiberCop’s network. The first implementation phase involves the installation of 26 systems, with completion scheduled for early 2026.

“The integration of renewable energy sources into our assets is a key driver in making networks more sustainable and resilient,” said Massimo Sarmi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FiberCop. “Self-generated energy enables us to optimise operational efficiency and strengthen our contribution to decarbonisation. At full rollout, the project will allow us to cover approximately 35% of FiberCop’s total energy consumption through photovoltaic power.“

The project has been developed to increase energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of FiberCop’s operations through the installation of a network of photovoltaic systems that enhances the value of the company’s real estate assets. The installation of the first 26 systems, with a total installed capacity of more than 3 MWp, will generate approximately 4.35 GWh of clean energy per year. The environmental benefit is immediate: approximately 1,435 tonnes of CO saved annually, equivalent to the absorption capacity of more 120.000 adult trees or the removal of more than 700 cars from the road for one year.

The 26 systems currently under development are distributed across the country and include sites of particular significance, such as the installation at Via Oriolo Romano in Rome, with an installed capacity of 1,100.84 kWp.

A distinctive feature of the Solar Project is the activation, for each system, of the CACER configuration (Renewable Energy Self-Consumption and Sharing Configurations), a mechanism that allows a user to consume energy generated by its own renewable systems even when these are located in a different place from where electricity is used. 

At present, the CACER configuration is already operational at two facilities, enabling immediate self-consumption of the energy produced and optimising energy flows for the benefit of network infrastructure. All new systems that will be progressively rolled out will be registered with the GSE, in order to activate the CACER configuration as soon as this is technically possible.

This approach will maximise the value of self-generated energy, further reduce the amount of energy drawn from the grid and enable advanced renewable energy sharing models, strengthening the project’s economic and environmental sustainability.
