Engagement begins with provincial authorities to promote eco-friendly fibre deployment

FiberCop and the Union of Italian Provinces (UPI) have launched a strategic partnership to establish an efficient, sustainable model for fibre optic deployment along provincial roads, balancing digital expansion with environmental preservation. The initiative defines the synergy between UPI and FiberCop, which held its inaugural meeting with provincial authorities on March 12.

The project aims to promote low-impact engineering methodologies, such as micro-trenching, to accelerate fibre optic network deployment and optimise benefits for both citizens and local government. This initiative builds on an existing framework agreement between UPI and FiberCop, which serves as the blueprint for the sustainable development of digital infrastructure across Italy’s provinces.

“For FiberCop, rolling out a fibre network is about driving local innovation,” said Angela Gargani,  Public Affairs Director at FiberCop. “The protocol signed with UPI facilitates the country’s digital transformation. Collaborating with local authorities enables more efficient, sustainable works, utilising low-impact excavation to reduce timelines, costs, and public disruption. Very high-capacity networks underpin the technologies transforming our economy and society, while engagement with local communities creates the conditions for growth and improved services.”

“Ensuring access to technological infrastructure is a strategic priority for Italian provinces,” said UPI Director Piero Antonelli, “but we must also ensure that the impact on provincial roads is minimised. Through this synergy with FiberCop, UPI is supporting provincial bodies with both technical and regulatory expertise to simplify procedures and shorten deployment schedules.”

The meeting confirmed the strategic importance of provinces in Italy's digital transformation and the need for modern, sustainable infrastructure, initiating a technical dialogue to streamline permits, leverage existing infrastructure, and accelerate fibre roll-out.
