• Technological evolution plan launched, bringing artificial intelligence and computing capacity close to businesses, local areas and public administrations

FiberCop accelerates innovation and announces the construction of a national infrastructure based on more than 100 edge data centers distributed throughout Italy. Through the transformation of its telecommunications exchanges into advanced digital hubs, FiberCop provides its operator clients with a distributed platform to support the development of innovative digital services for communities, businesses and the public administrations.

The first edge data center is already active exchange in Rome. New sites will open shortly in Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Naples and Palermo.

The project marks a profound evolution of FiberCop's infrastructure model: the exchanges – already the heart of the access network – become strategic nodes capable of integrating connectivity, computing capacity and data management, giving rise to an edge architecture distributed on a national scale.

Leveraging its extensive and widespread network, FiberCop is making available a proximity infrastructure that brings computing power ever closer to data and end users, enabling real-time services, greater protection of sensitive information and more efficient use of connectivity. The setup also facilitates the widespread use of artificial intelligence, allowing businesses and the public sector to accelerate processes, improve efficiency and optimise costs.

FiberCop’s edge network is also a strategic enabler for operators who build services for local governments, allowing for the development of more advanced and secure public services.  The architecture enables new applications in the fields of mobility, health, environment, security and public administration. Proximity between computing capacity, data and connectivity helps to ensure data sovereignty, in full compliance with legislation and with the highest level of protection.

The work is already at an advanced stage: FiberCop launched trials of national edge cloud solutions in December 2025. In March 2026, it presented its first trials at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, demonstrating the ability to transform the access network into a high-performance distributed platform.

The edge data center project is part of the broader technological evolution plan for FiberCop's exchanges, involving the shutdown of traditional copper exchanges and the gradual transition to fiber infrastructure.

Through research investments promoted by the Innovation Hub and a network of collaborations with universities, centres of excellence and industrial associations, FiberCop is contributing to the development of technologies that will enable the digital transformation of Italy and Europe.

The company participates in national and international research programmes aimed at strengthening the resilience and security of digital infrastructures, while supporting the objectives of European technological sovereignty.
