NETBOOK 2026, THE DIGITAL MAP OF ITALY

News Fibercop - NETBOOK 2026, THE DIGITAL MAP OF ITALY

How is the digital network distributed across Italy? Where does the fiber run? How are the exchanges connected? What infrastructure supports the country’s connectivity?

FiberCop answers these questions with the NetBook 2026, which offers a clear, accessible representation of its infrastructure in the form of a true digital map of Italy.

This publication brings together maps, infographics and data to illustrate the nationwide access network. It highlights the comprehensive infrastructure that forms the basis of digital development for citizens, businesses and the public sector.

A network spanning the country

The NetBook showcases the scale and scope of the FiberCop network. By the end of 2025, the network comprised approximately 28 million kilometers of fiber-optic cable, equivalent to around 700 times the circumference of the Earth. By the end of December, ultra-broadband infrastructure was available in over 6,200 Italian municipalities, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity had reached over 14 million properties. The growth trajectory continues.  Today, the number of residential units connected to FTTH has reached approximately 15 million, confirming the accelerating pace of the fiber network rollout. Figures that highlight the scale of an extensive and complex network.

Understanding the network, region by region

The core of the publication is its mapping component.  For each province, it depicts the access network, including central offices, fiber-optic connections, and the technological architecture that enables services. This analysis enables us to look beyond the numbers and examine the physical reality of the network. It shows how connectivity is being implemented across the region and how different technologies, such as FTTH and FTTC, coexist within an ever-evolving infrastructure.

The NetBook emphasizes the rapid expansion of Italy's fiber-optic network and the country's continuous improvement in digital connectivity.  This includes increasingly widespread ultra-fast network coverage, significant FTTH technology growth, and the now widespread availability of broadband and ultra-broadband services.

"The NetBook is not merely the recognized identity document that FiberCop and Italy boast as a symbol of the country's digital growth," explains Alma Fazzolari, FiberCop's Director of Strategic Governance. "It provides concrete data and figures demonstrating that the country's most extensive and competitive network is capable of ensuring the capacity, reliability, and resilience necessary to enable and transform cutting-edge technologies into a tangible reality. This will lead to long-term, sustainable digital growth. These include the Cloud, data centers, artificial intelligence and hybrid ground-satellite architectures. Regarding the latter, FiberCop has been conducting field trials on hybrid architectures combining satellite backhaul and terrestrial access since late 2025. These trials enable the extension of ultra-broadband coverage to logistically and geographically challenging areas.”

Growing demand for digital services

The report provides an in-depth analysis of digital usage and features a ranking of provinces by average data traffic per active line. This emphasizes the importance of major urban areas, such as Naples, Milan, and Rome, which consistently rank among the most active regions. It also demonstrates the increasing internet usage in less densely populated areas.
