FiberCop delivers ultra-fast broadband to Maratea. Innovation meets local heritage in the heart of the village

News Fibercop - FiberCop delivers ultra-fast broadband to Maratea. Innovation meets local heritage in the heart of the village

Amid the narrow alleyways, stone arches and rock-hewn staircases of Maratea's historic centre, technology makes its presence felt without disturbing the character of the place. Here, at the heart of the village, FiberCop has completed an infrastructure that blends technological progress with the protection of historic heritage.

Laying the fibre optic network through such a delicate, historically layered urban fabric demands precision and care at every step. All works were carried out by hand, without heavy machinery: cobblestones were removed, catalogued and carefully repositioned to preserve the original layout and materials throughout.

This approach has safeguarded the village's appearance, leaving the visual and cultural continuity of its streets undisturbed.

“Ultra-broadband has improved residents' quality of life, supporting digital inclusion, access to online services and new employment opportunities. The expansion of the fibre optic network makes the area more attractive and strengthens the competitiveness of local businesses,” said the Mayor of Maratea, Cesare Albanese.

The work is part of the Italia 1 Giga Plan, one of the country's main infrastructure projects, which aims to extend ultra-fast connectivity across Italy. With the fibre optic network in place, services such as remote work, telemedicine, high-definition streaming and intelligent urban management will become accessible.

Beyond the technological dimension, the project is equally notable for its commitment to sustainability: low-impact techniques, the reuse of existing materials and careful resource management help reduce consumption and emissions, integrating digital progress with environmental responsibility.

“Being protagonists of the digital transformation also means understanding the places in which you work,” said Maria Rizzuti, Field Operations Line Manager for the regions of Basilicata and Campania.

The results achieved in Basilicata confirm the effectiveness of this approach: FTTH coverage has exceeded 54% of all 302,000 total buildings in the Region, thanks to works carried out under the PNRR and FiberCop's own programme.

This work is made possible by the daily commitment of field teams, design engineers and technicians working on the ground, who tackle complex environments with specialist expertise, while respecting the character of the village.

The project extends beyond the centre, reaching up the slopes of Monte San Biagio to the summit where the Cristo di Maratea stands. Here, in an area of great symbolic and scenic significance, some 40 properties are now connected to the ultra-broadband network.

This infrastructure serves the area without altering its character, bringing connectivity and new opportunities while honouring its history.

Maratea’s history lives on in its stone, while an invisible network connects it to the world.
